The combination of phenomenal mountain lifestyle, location and access to markets have created the perfect storm of opportunity of a clustering of innovators, disrupters and adventure-seeking entrepreneurs who understand how to conduct big business from this West Kootenay region, entrepreneurs like long-time Trail resident, Don Freschi. As CEO of Fenix Advanced Materials Inc., Don’s high tech company specializes in the manufacturing of ultra-high purity (UHP) metals for the Solar Energy, Telecommunications, and Commercial & Military Infrared markets. In November of 2017, Don was honored with a 2017 Professional Achievement Award at the ASTTBC (Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC) recognizing his achievements as a technology entrepreneur and business mentor; achievements that many Metal Tech Alley companies and entrepreneur’s continue to be acknowledged for. Time and time again the region is seeing this kind of success from local entrepreneurs who continue to operate on a global scale and are accelerating positive change.
Don’s West Kootenay roots are deep, his passion for business is matched only by his enthusiasm for the area. When asked why he prefers to do business in Trail, “There were numerous opportunities to move my business elsewhere like the Coast or the Okanagan, both those places are great, but there’s no Kootenay Lake or Red Mountain. Here, we have it all; an affordable active lifestyle in an incredible setting with the expertise and access I need to advance my business; all these great things allow me to achieve a balance with my life and my work.”
Along with his day to day duties managing Fenix, contributing to the creation of the MIDAS FabLab, and being an Executive in Residence for the Kootenay Association for Science and Technology, Don Freschi produces and hosts the TV show SPORTS FISHING ON THE FLY. For over 20 years Don’s knowledge of fly fishing and fly tying has been unparalleled. Shot entirely in high-definition, and airing across North America on the World Fishing Network (WFN), and CHEK TV, each episode takes the viewer to a beautiful, and often remote location, to fish for the various species local to that area.
As evident in many of our articles, the West Kootenay is home to a variety of diverse businesses and unique individuals. Don Freschi, along with being an engaged and active member of the local business community, is a strong representation of the type of entrepreneur connecting us through innovation and the unexpected to the global community.
