Fenix AM Partners with UBCO through MITACS
Fenix Advanced Materials, located in Trail, is partnering with a team of researchers from UBC Okanagan to develop a new kind of lithium battery which is smaller and more powerful than current battery technology. This partnership will go beyond Fenix and UBCO to include other local industry firms such as Retriev Technologies, Eagle Graphite, and Teck Metals. The need for new battery technology is the result of increasingly small electronic devices, especially those used in the medical field. These new batteries will combine lithium and tellerium, a metal which Fenix processes to be ultra-high purity. All companies involved are partners in Metal Tech Alley, and Don Freschi, CEO of Fenix, writes that using local materials will be crucial in stimulating the economy within Metal Tech Alley and it’s another step towards the circular economy! This research project is made possible through MITACS Acceleration Grant and Rural Dividend Fund.
